When I upgraded to Movable Type 3.33 recently I was hoping the built-in spam management features would be sufficient, so I didn't bother reinstalling the spam plugin I was using before. Alas, that was a pipe dream. The amount of comment spam getting past the filters has been increasing and the amount of trackback spam (truly staggering) has been interfering with the ability to link blog entries to each other.
So I just installed two plugins:
- Jay Allen's Comment Challenge plugin
- Solid Wall of Code's AutoBan
Comment Challenge appears to do exactly what's required with minimal fuss.
Movable Type needs trackback whitelists for precisely the reasons Erik J. Barzeski explains in the linked blog entry. In the meantime, I'm going to try to use .htaccess whitelists with AutoBan (along with some tweaking of the OneHourMaxPings and OneDayMaxPings values in the mt-config.cgi file) to achieve the same result. Hopefully this will make intrasite trackbacking easier.

Feel free to send a TrackBack to my post. It'll go through.
I've switched to WordPress, though, because I got fed up with MovableType.

Thanks!
Six Apart seems to be alienating a fair proportion of their user base. Have spent too much time in the last couple of months customising MT to have the energy to look at alternatives just now, but certainly WordPress seems to have an excellent reputation. Will definitely keep it in mind.
